Welcome to 4th Grade Math! This full-year course is designed to strengthen students’ number sense, deepen their conceptual understanding, and build fluency with multi-digit operations, fractions, geometry, and problem solving. Through engaging lessons, hands-on strategies, and real-world connections, students will develop confidence and competence in applying math to their everyday lives.
The course begins with place value understanding, teaching students how to model, compare, and round multi-digit numbers. From there, students will build their addition and subtraction skills with regrouping, solve comparison problems, and learn how to interpret word problems.
In the multiplication and division units, learners explore different strategies, including the distributive property, partial products, area models, and long division. Students will apply these skills to solve multi-step word problems, estimate, and choose efficient methods for computation.
A major focus of the course is on fractions and decimals: students will model equivalent fractions, compare and order them, and perform operations such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Connections between fractions and decimals, including money and measurement, are emphasized to promote number sense.
In the second half of the course, students will explore geometry and measurement, including:
Classifying shapes by angles and lines
Identifying symmetry
Measuring and constructing angles
Working with customary and metric units
Solving perimeter and area problems, including composite and inscribed shapes
Throughout the course, students will engage with:
Word problems that develop reasoning and persistence
Properties of operations to explain thinking and justify strategies
Math modeling tools such as diagrams, line plots, number lines, and visual models
Patterns, Roman numerals, and time-based reasoning (like elapsed time)
By the end of the year, students will be able to:
Fluently compute with whole numbers and fractions
Solve complex word problems using multiple operations and strategies
Apply geometry and measurement skills in real-world contexts
Think critically and communicate their mathematical reasoning clearly
