Introduction

Understanding Microlearning and Its Application in Workplace Training

What is Microlearning?

Microlearning is a way of learning that delivers information in small, easy-to-digest chunks. It focuses on one specific skill or piece of knowledge at a time, making it quick and simple for people to learn something new. Microlearning can be done through short videos, infographics, quizzes, or other digital tools that can be accessed on any device, like a phone, tablet, or computer. This makes it very flexible and perfect for busy people who need to fit learning into their daily routines (Winger, 2018)

How I Used Microlearning in Workplace Training

For Assignment 1, I created a training program called “Mastering Lesson Planning: Essential Skills for New Math Teachers.” This training is designed as a microlearning experience, meaning it’s broken down into short, focused lessons that new math teachers can easily complete. Each lesson is about creating key parts of a lesson plan, like essential questions and “I Will” and “We Will” statements. By keeping each part short and focused, teachers can quickly learn and start using these skills in their classrooms.

Why This Training Fits the Microlearning Approach

  1. Focused Content: Each training session zeroes in on one essential aspect of lesson planning. By focusing on one thing at a time, teachers are less likely to feel overwhelmed and more likely to remember and use what they learn (Tipton, 2022).
  2. Short and Easy: The training includes a 3-minute video and a 2-minute guide, so each lesson takes just five minutes to complete. This fits well with microlearning’s emphasis on keeping lessons short and simple, making it easy for teachers to learn without taking up too much of their time (Javorcik & Polasek, 2019).
  3. Action-Oriented: The training is all about giving teachers practical skills they can immediately use in their lesson planning. Microlearning is great for this because it’s all about learning things that can be applied right away, rather than just theory (Tipton, 2022).
  4. Learn Anywhere, Anytime: Because the training is digital, teachers can access it on any device—whether they’re at home, at school, or on the go. This flexibility makes it easier for them to fit learning into their busy lives (Javorcik & Polasek, 2019).
